What is Mission?
Mission is a web app for education that seeks to bring students and staff together, to give both a present and clearly-communicated voice with regard to rules at school. Why?
Transparent communication between staff and students:
- Increases students’ self-advocacy skills;
- Enables administration to make more conscious policy decisions; and
- Builds on the principles of design thinking, to iterate and improve the educational experience.
Mission-Driven
Pun intended. As students, we feel it’s an obligation to optimize the experience for ourselves, our peers, and educators + admins.
We’ve learned a lot from our initial research, but there are three takeaways we’re operating with:
- Firstly, over half of students said there was no centralized place for school rules and policies that they knew of.
- Secondly, like many other aspects of education, the model for self-advocacy remains unclear for many students post-pandemic. At one school, when faced with a suboptimal policy, a group of students resorted to protesting.
- Finally, both students and teachers strongly agree something like Mission would be an incredibly beneficial tool for tackling the above two issues.

🗣 What does this mean? Ultimately, it doesn’t matter if you have a policy written on a page if students and/or teachers:
- Don’t know how to access it;
- Can’t see its changes over time; and
- Aren’t treated as proper stakeholders in those decisions.
